The laboratory was responsible for following up on reports of rabies, and, when possible, verifying rabies infection in animals; in this photo Miss Skolfield, one of the lab technicians, is cutting sections of animal spinal-cord tissue, probably for rabies vaccine production. Pasteur Institutes were established in some American health departments and hospitals after 1900 to produce rabies vaccine and treat rabies victims. Some also carried on research.
