Brewing Social Capital: A Survey of Breweries and Social Ties across the United States

As research continues to illustrate the important role social capital plays in
mitigating disasters and promoting resilience, this study conducted across 144 breweries in 33 states collected data on how these institutions are promoting social capital within their communities. Taking a hyper-local approach and drawing on similar studies, the survey was conducted over email and the phone between March and October 2020. With specific attention to economic trends, the study also collected data on perceptions of different shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and consequential recession. The data offers insight into many best practices incorporated in breweries which foster some of the key pillars of social capital.
