Invasive tree-borne organisms such as PSHB are controlled by breaking up wood from an infested tree， in a wood downsizing machine (10) which has a housing (24) defining a cutting chamber (26) with an inlet (30) and an outlet (32) and a mechanically driven cutter (20) within the chamber (26). The invasive organisms are controlled by supplying hot water， preferably in the form of steam， to the cutting chamber (26).
