The Green text (video)

BACKGROUND
The Green Text (video) contributes to the broad field of video art and the narrow field of socially engaged art practice. The peer community includes Ryan Gander (UK) and Gabrielle de Vietri (Australia). Key characteristics of this scholarly debate include the use of community events and the video medium. Recent exhibitions that have influenced this debate include Framed Movements at ACCA (2014). The Green Text (video) seeks to extend this field by using video to capitalise and expand upon socially engaged art practice and live events.
CONTRIBUTION
This Creative work explores how the video medium can be used to visually and conceptually extend artworks that involve untrained performers and community events. In other words, how can video and post-production editing be used to extend a live event? This Creative work was made in collaboration with Associate Professor Andy Thomson. We documented a lawn bowling tournament at the Natimuk Bowling Club and combined this footage with an audio script. The methodology enabled us to create a lasting record of the event and to generate a conceptual narrative, via the temporal and visual characteristics of the video medium.
SIGNIFICANCE
Green text (video) premiered at Incinerator Gallery in 2015. The gallery is a multi-arts facility funded by the City of Moonee Valley. The Moonee Valley Leader newspaper ran a feature article on this Creative work. This exhibition has since toured to Horsham Regional gallery, where it was reviewed in The Weekly Advertiser and Art Monthly Australia magazine, Issue 277, March 2015.
