Using a model of pregnant guinea pigs exposed to normoxia or hypoxia with or without melatonin treatment (1 mg/kg/day), this research evaluated neonatal outcomes through echocardiography, vascular reactivity tests, and molecular assays for oxidative stress and redox balance. Key findings include GH-induced reductions in birth weight, altered left ventricular development, enhanced systolic function, and impaired endothelial vasodilation, all partially reversed by melatonin. Melatonin also reduced oxidative stress and increased catalase activity in hypoxic neonates, though it unexpectedly modified cardiac structure in normoxic conditions.
