Youth and Education behind Bars: A Narrative Inquiry into the Educational Experiences of Indonesian Youth in A Correctional Facility

This thesis explores how incarcerated Indonesian Muslim youth (ages 12-17) in Aceh, Indonesia, understand their educational experiences within correctional facilities. Using narrative inquiry and Bourdieu's social reproduction theory, the study reveals that crime negatively impacts academic performance while inadequate school support increases criminal involvement. Although correctional facilities attempt to support youth aspirations, significant challenges impede educational development. The research highlights how culturally responsive programs and supportive relationships enhance learning motivation and belonging. Findings advocate for reconceptualising correctional education through inclusive approaches that elevate youth voices and address their unique vulnerabilities, contributing evidence-based insights for reforming correctional education in Indonesia and globally.
