Main focus of this Eurobarometer are environmental consciousness,
attitudes to biotechnology and gene-technology as well as consumer
behavior in the Common Market. Topics: Eligibility to vote at place of
residence; personal opinion leadership and frequency of political
discussions; postmaterialism; frequency of obtaining news from
television, radio and newspapers; actual and desired speed of
unification for the EC; importance of environmentally conscious conduct
and thrifty or efficient use of energy (scale); importance of energy
conservation and clean air in the cities; knowledge as well as
assessment of the seriousness of the problems from the greenhouse
effect, acid rain and destruction of the ozone layer; classification of
causes for these environmental problems; actual personal contribution
to energy conservation and perceived opportunities for further energy
conservation; judgement on the efficiency of energy conservation of
public institutions at local, regional, national, European and
world-wide level; preference for direction decisions on energy
investment by the market or government; judgement on energy sources
regarding their future price stability, security of supply and their
environmental risk; attitude to future development of nuclear energy;
attitude to an increase in energy taxes; attitude to reduced taxation
of environmentally friendly packaging and increased taxes for
environmentally unfriendly packaging; sources of information about the
risks of radioactivity; satisfaction with information about
radioactivity as well as reasons for dissatisfaction; assessment of
trustworthiness of information providers such as scientists,
universities, government offices or environmental associations
regarding radioactivity; most important criteria for trustworthiness;
perceived risks of nuclear energy (scale); attitude to prevention of
illegal transport of radioactive substances and improvement of security
conditions in Eastern European nuclear power plants; judgement on the
danger of radioactive radiation in selected situations. Source of
information for larger acquisitions; acquisition of products and
services from other EC countries; direct order from foreign suppliers
in an EC country; satisfaction with purchase of foreign products;
problems encountered with purchases from other countries;
product-specific assessment of confidence in purchasing foreign
products; country image relative to product groups; major reasons for
selection of these countries and criteria for their image; most
important effects that a European domestic market should have on daily
life; major obstacles for purchase or sale of products in another EC
country; ability of the national institution or the EC institution to
solve the problems of trade between the EC countries; living in the
vicinity of an EC border. Effect of new technologies in selected
natural science areas; knowledge in microbiology and genetics (test);
attitude to use of microbiologic and gene-technology procedures with
plants, microorganisms, animals, food, medicines and humans;
classification of biotechnology and gene-technology as complicated
(scale); most important source of information about new developments;
most trustworthy source of information on biotechnology and
gene-technology; attitude to gene-technology and the significance of
ethical rules (scale); assessment of the possibilities of opponents of
gene technology to exert influence on the further development;
satisfaction with residential area, residence, rent and commuting time
to work; most important reason for moving because of a change in jobs.
Self-classification on a left-right continuum; union membership;
marital status; size of household as well as number of children in
household and their ages; equiping household with durable economic
goods, in particular in the area of entertainment electronics and
computers; time worked each week; span of control; employment in the
civil service or in the private sector; self-classification of social
class; residential status; rural or urban residential area;
religiousness. The following questions were posed only in Norway: level
of information on the negotiations between EC and EFTA on a common
European economic area; personal decision behavior regarding this
economic area in case of a referendum; importance of EC membership of
Norway for the country; preference for or against EC membership of
Norway; knowledge about the result of the Danish referendum on the
Maastricht Treaty; influence of the referendum on one´s own attitude to
EC membership of Norway. Also encoded were: date of interview; time of
interview; length of interview; presence of third persons during
interview; willingness of respondent to cooperate; possession of a
telephone.
