Its goal is to contain a page with pictures, text, and other information for every species and for each group of organisms, living or extinct. Connections between Tree of Life web pages follow phylogenetic branching patterns between groups of organisms, so visitors can browse the hierarchy of life and learn about phylogeny and evolution as well as the characteristics of individual groups.

生命之树网络项目汇聚了众多专家与业余爱好者的共同努力，旨在编纂关于生物多样性的丰富信息。该项目旨在为每一种生物及其所属的每个生物群体，无论是现存还是已灭绝的，提供一个包含图片、文字及其他信息的页面。生命之树网络页面之间的联系遵循着生物群体间的系统发育分支模式，使得访客能够浏览生命体系的层级结构，并深入了解系统发育与进化的知识，以及各个生物群体的特征。
