"Summary tabulations and illustrations for 93 species representing 56 families of fish and megainvertebrates, as well as associated environmental observations are given for 738 8.5-m otter trawl tows made in the Hudson-Raritan Estuary between January 1992 and December 1993. The 20 most frequently occurring species were: winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus (85 percent of trawls); windowpane, Scophthalmus aquosus (81 percent); Atlantic rock crab, Cancer irroratus (65 percent); spider crab, Libinia sp.(60 percent); lady crab, Ovalipes ocellatus (51 percent); starfish, Asterias sp. (47 percent); little skate, Raja erinacea (46 percent); blue crab, Callinectes sapidus (44 percent); horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus (42 percent); spotted hake, Urophycis regia (33 percent); winter skate, Raja ocellata (32 percent); summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus (31 percent); scup, Stenotomus chrysops (27 percent); striped searobin, Prionotus evolans (24 percent); northern moonsnail, Euspira heros (21 percent); butterfish, Peprilus triacanthus (21 percent); northern searobin, Prionotus carolinus (19 percent); Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus (17 percent); red hake, Urophycis chuss (17 percent); and hermit crab, Pagrus sp. (17 percent). These species dominated catches throughout the survey, accounting for 91 percent and 87 percent of the total number and weight, respectively, of all species collected."--Introduction. by Stuart J.
