Volatile fatty acid production from fish sludge

This study focuses on evaluating the potential of volatile fatty acid production through anaerobic fermentation from fish sludge. It uses fish sludge sourced from aquaculture in Norway and anaerobic digested sludge sourced from Stockholm, Sweden for the production. During the study two different pH conditions (acidic and alkaline), two different pretreatments (separation of soluble material through supernatant removal and hydrothermal treatment) as well as fish sludges from two different salmon farms are evaluated for their effects on the production. The microbial community data in the batch reactors was analyzed through 16SrRNA sequencing to find the effect of the operational parameters on the community and connect the community to VFA production.
