aBALB/c mice were orally or i.p. infected with hyperinfectious S. Choleraesuis χ3246, S. Bovismorbificans 158 or conventionally virulent S. Typhimurium reference strain 14028 derived from stationary phase cultures containing either LB; low phosphate low magnesium (LPM pH 5.5) [41], [42]; or minimal E medium [40] supplemented with 0.2% glucose and 0.1% casamino acids, at the pH indicated. Oral LD50 and i.p. competitive index (CI) virulence assays were performed as in Table 1.
