Suspended Sediment Concentration in Rivers of the Peruvian Amazon

This dataset contains suspended sediment concentration data collected from cross-section samples at different depths and verticals in Peruvian Amazon rivers, using the EWI (equal width increment) and EDI (equal discharge increment) sampling methods. Water and sediment samples have been collected during several seasons since 2023, using a Van Dorn sampler adapted to a hydrodynamic system. Each point sample includes the following variables: Distance: distance from the reference bank, usually the left bank, in m. Depth: sampling point depth in m. Fine concentration: concentration of fine particles (silt and clay) in mg/L. Coarse concentration: concentration of coarse particles (fine sands) in mg/L. Total concentration: total suspended sediment concentration in mg/L. To support continuous monitoring, reference stations have been established where sampling will always be conducted during each measurement campaign. These data are highly important for the region, since the high productivity of the lower basin depends largely on nutrients associated with sediments transported from the Andes to the Amazon floodplains. These nutrients support biodiversity, fisheries, and agriculture, forming the basis of important ecosystem services and economic activities. Therefore, changes in sediment transport can have negative environmental impacts and, consequently, affect economic development and the well-being of local populations.
