The Historical Archaeology of Dam Construction Camps in Central Arizona, Volume 2B: Sites in the New Waddell Dam Area

In June 1986 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded Dames & Moore a contract to conduct historical archaeology studies as part of the mitigation program for the Regulatory Storage Division (Plan 6) of the Central Arizona Project. Final reports of these studies are being issued in three volumes. Volume I is a synthesis of the entire project. Volume 3 details laboratory methods. Volume 2 contains descriptions and interpretations of each of the sites studied at the seven localities investigated. This report, Volume 2B, contains site descriptions for the sites studied in the New Waddell Dam area along the Agua Fria River. Chapter 1 presents a summary of the history of construction of the Dyer Diversion Dam and Waddell Dam, and also discusses the study goals as well as the field and laboratory methods developed for the study of archaeology .sites in the New Waddell Dam area. Chapter 2 describes and interprets the archaeological remnants of Camp Dyer, the construction camp occupied first in the 1890s when construction of the diversion dam was initiated, and again in the 1920s when it was completed. Chapter 3 is a description and interpretation of the archaeological record of Camp Pleasant, the construction camp occupied when Waddell Dam was built in the 1920s and again in the 1930s when the dam was modified to address safety concerns. Chapter 4 discusses three other sites that were minimally investigated-the Beardsley Canal, a lime kiln, and a portion of the Phoenix to Prescott Road.
