FOCCUS WP9 MS9.1 Applications prototype: ESC3 - 3.2.3 - Storm surge and extreme water levels forecasts in Portuguese estuaries

This Zenodo item contains example outputs from a coastal application developed within the scope of the FOCCUS project (see FOCCUS D8.1) as proof of prototype development. The application was designed to support the implementation of extreme sea level events early warning system in areas influenced by estuarine dynamics. The XBeach numerical model was applied to simulate hydrodynamic processes under extreme events, providing insights into wave overwash and flooding patterns in vulnerable coastal and estuarine zones. The dataset includes an XBeach model output file in NetCDF format, containing spatially distributed hydrodynamic variables for a two-hour event simulation. The figure illustrates the modelled water depth distribution along the coastal stretch of Costa da Caparica, southward of the Tagus estuary in Portugal. The wave conditions used in the simulation represent the storm Hercules, which impacted the Portuguese coast in January 2014. The outputs highlight flooded areas, including roads and beach accesses, some consistent with observations reported during the event.
