This study aims to investigate the processing characteristics and differential allocation of attentional resources during the encoding stage of the Mnemic Neglect Effect using eye-tracking indicators to further validate its underlying mechanism. The findings indicate that participants consistently showed a stable mnemic neglect effect and occurrence of the mnemic neglect effect is related to reading duration, fixation count, and regression count at the encoding stage. The main results demonstrate that when processing self-threatening information, individuals not only spend less time focusing on it but also face greater cognitive load and processing difficulty, leading to shallow encoding of self-threatening information and consequently poorer recall performance.
