Flooding in the Republic of the Congo, 2023–2024

Since 28 December 2023, above-average rainfall and flash floods have affected the Congo causing an impact on agriculture and livelihoods. The Data in Emergencies (DIEM) team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) examined satellite images from the beginning of this period and conducted a rapid impact assessment to understand the impact of the floods and support the country with a field assessment. This StoryMap provides the potential impact of the flooding on agricultural production and livelihoods in the Congo. Key findings in numbers: The flooding has extended 513 000 ha; 300 ha of cropland (2 percent of the total cropland) is potentially impacted; Nine of the country’s twelve departments have been affected; and Agricultural infrastructure has been destroyed.
