Fanfiction and Mental Illness Survey Data

Responses to a survey conducted in May 2023 on fanfiction practices around mental illness. The survey ran for 3 weeks and was circulated on social media, with a strong presence in fan studies/fan stats communities. The questions aimed to gather information on how people read, write, feel and think about mental illness in fanfiction. Though anonymous, the data contains personal information and those consenting to the survey agreed that they understood the information could not be recalled after submission (including compliance with GDPR for those affected). To further protect identity, the demographics have been disaggregated from the fanfiction-specific responses. The aggregated version is a restricted file in this dataset and access may be obtained on request from the data controller. All three sets of data have had their order randomised, and where participants gave identifying data this has been redacted. Participants understood that the data would be made publicly available in this form.
