X-RAY EMISSION FROM TWO COLLISIONAL RING GALAXIES

Galactic outflows play an important role in regulating the rate of starformation as well as in the chemical evolution of galaxies. We plan to observethe Xray emission from two starbursts in two collisional ring galaxies (theCartwheel Galaxy and AM0644741) that have similar star formation rates butdifferent metallicities. Massive star formation is confined to an outer annularring, not a starburst galaxy nucleus, allowing for accurate measurements oftemperature and luminosity. We will determine how the outflow.s temperatures andmetallicities depend on the intrinsic metallicity of the host galaxy.s ISM, aswell as constrain the relative contributions of HMXB and hot gas to the totalXray emission.
