Microbial Survival and Growth on Electrodes

This study examined the microbial colonization of noncorrodible electrodes, using electrochemical techniques to monitor the survival and growth of a mixed community biofilm. Even in the absence of externally supplied power, a conductive substrate led to increased numbers of microbial cells. The results will help explain observations of a changing potential of colonized microbial fuel cells cathodes and during stainless steel ennoblement, as well as improve our understanding of natural biogeochemical batteries in the deep ocean.
