Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Blok (1880-1921) – poet and playwright, one of the most outstanding representatives of Russian Symbolism Александр Александрович Блок (1880-1921) - русский поэт и драматург, один из наиболее ярких представителей русского символизма. November 16 (28 new style) 1880 – born in St. Petersburg into the family of a professor and lawyer, nephew on his mother’s side of the celebrated scholar A. N. Beketov; 1898-1906 - after graduating Vvedenskii’s gymnasium, he studied first in the law faculty and then the philological faculty of St. Petersburg University; 1898 -met his future wife, L. D. Mendeleeva, daughter of the famous chemist D. I. Mendeleev, who became the main heroine of Blok’s early lyrics; 1903 - Blok debuts in the journal “Novyi put’” (New Path), edited by Zinaida Gippius and Dmitri Merezhkovskii, with the poetic cycle “Iz posvashchenii” (From Dedications); 1904 - Blok’s first book “Stikhi o prokrasnoi Dame” (Verses About the Beautiful Lady) is issued by the publishing house “Grif.” In the 1900’s Blok’s collections of poetry and other works follow one after another: “Nechaianaia radost’” (Unexpected Joy), “Snezhnaia maska” (Snow Mask, 1907), “Zemlia v snegu” (Earth Covered in Snow), “Gorod” (City), “Liricheskie dramy” (Lyric Dramas, 1908), the drama “Pesnia sud’by” (Song of Fate), and the cycle “Ital’ianskie stikhi” (Italian Verses, 1909); 1906 - Blok’s drama “Balaganchik” (The Showbooth) staged by Vsevolod Meierkhol’d in Komissarzhevskaia’s theater; 1911 – 1912 - Blok’s three-volume “Collected Poetry” published. In these years Blok continued to work on his long poem “Vozmezdie” (Retribution); 1914 – the cycles of poems “Karmen” (Carmen) and “Arfy i skripki” (Harps and Violins), dedicated to the singer L. A. Del’mas; 1918 - Blok responds to the revolution with the article “Intelligentsia and Revolution” and the poem “Dvenadtsat’” (The Twelve); 1919 - in charge of the repertoire of the Bol’shoi Dramatic Theater. Occasionally reads his poems in Petrograd and Moscow; 1921 - Blok’s last public appearance with the speech “O naznachenie poeta” (On the Calling of the Poet) at an evening dedicated to Pushkin’s memory; August 7, 1921 – Blok’s death in Petrograd. He was buried in the Smolensk Cemetery, and his remains transferred to the Volkovo Cemetery in 1944. 16 (28) ноября 1880 г. – родился в Петербурге в семье профессора-юриста. Дедом А. Менделеевой, дочерью химика Д.И. Менделеева, ставшей главной героиней ранней лирики Блока; 1903 г. - Блок дебютирует в журнале «Новый путь» (редакторы - З.Н. Гиппиус и Д.��. Мережковский) циклом «Из посвящений»; 1904 г. - в издательстве «Гриф» выходит первая книга Блока «Стихи о прекрасной Даме»; 1900 гг. - книги Блока выходят одна за другой: «Нечаянная радость», «Снежная маска» (1907), «Земля в снегу», «Город» и «Лирические драмы» (1908), драма «Песня судьбы» и цикл «Итальянские стихи» (1909); 1906 г. - драма Блока "Балаганчик" поставлена Мейерхольдом в театре Комиссаржевской; 1911 – 1912 гг. - выходит трехтомное «Собрание стихотворений» Блока. В эти же годы продолжается работа над поэмой «Возмездие»; 1914 г. - Блок выпускает циклы стихотворений «Кармен» и «Арфы и скрипки», посвященные певице Л. А. Дельмас; 1918 г. - Блок пишет статью «Интеллигенция и Революция», в этом же году появляется его поэма «Двенадцать»; 1919 г. - руководит репертуарной политикой Большого драматического театра, время от времени выступает с чтением своих стихов в Петрограде и Москве; 1921 г. - последнее заметное выступление Блока с речью «О назначении поэта», произнесенная на вечере памяти Пушкина; 7 августа 1921 г. – Блок скончался в Петрограде. Был похоронен на Смоленском кладбище; в 1944 г. прах поэта был перенесен на Волково кладбище.
