This study advances the rumen microbiome research by combining omics and SynCom engineering through the pipeline of microbiota-bacteria-enzymes-genes and uncovers the role of enzymatic synergy in driving carbohydrate metabolism. These findings provide a framework to harness low-abundance microbes and engineer functional consortia, which are of great importance to improve ruminant feed utilization and biomass conversion. Future work should explore the transcriptome profiles and the metabolic cross-feeding mechanisms of fiber degrading strains in rumen.
