Reactions of [nido-(Me2NCH2CH2)RC2B10H10]Na2 (R = H, MeOCH2CH2, Me2NCH2CH2) with ZrCl4(THF)2 or SmI2(THF)x gave unprecedentedly metallacarboranes with η7-arachno-carboranyl ligands, in which the heteroatom-containing pendant sidearms are both electronically and entropically necessary for the formation of such complexes with the central metal ions in the highest oxidation state.
