Nitrogen (N) is a very common element that is continuously in nature. Reactive nitrogen is used as a fertilizer in agriculture to increase our food, feed and fuel production. while an increasing number of waterbodies are experiencing N pollution due to the losses of fertilizer nitrogen, N can also produce nitrous oxides (N2O) during biological processes, which is a potent green house gas. Therefore, excess N in the waterbody should be removed In the meantime, N2O production should also be avoid during the removal process.BES is capable of treat NH4+/NH3 in a cost-efficient and green way, especially for bioanode conversation, it is advanced as its potential of directly oxidizing NH4+/NH3 to N2 without oxygen input.Our study aims to improve the ammonium removal rates and explore the mechanism of removal.
