A High-Resolution Inventory of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions in New York State

Gridded New York State methane emissions inventory (GNYS) This repository contains 2020 methane emission maps for New York based on the 2022 NYSDEC Statewide Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reports and gridded at 100-meter horizontal resolution. This data accompanies the manuscript entitled "A high-resolution inventory of anthropogenic methane in New York State" (doi:10.1021/acs.est.5c07245) by Matthew L. Loman, Lee T. Murray, Eric M. Liebensperger, and Joannes D. Maasakkers published in Environmental Science & Technology on August 7, 2025 and reflects the most up-to-date form of the gridded methane emission inventory described therein at the time of publication. Files gridded_NYS_methane_2020.nc4 Dimensions: easting (meters) × northing (meters) × time (seconds since 2020-01-01 00:00:00 UTC) Units: kg CH4 m^-2 s^-1 This file contains annual mean methane emission fluxes for 82 source types in New York for the year 2020, gridded at 100 m × 100 m horizontal resolution using the UTM Zone 18N projection (EPSG:26918). This data was developed so that New York totals are consistent with the values reported for each of the corresponding source types for 2020 in the 2022 NYSDEC Statewide Greenhouse Gas Emission Reports as well as the 2022 supplemental reports from NYSERDA, the New York State Oil and Gas Sector Methane Emissions Inventory and the Energy Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions under the NY State Climate Act Report, which describe in greater detail the emissions reported in the 2022 NYSDEC Sectoral Report 1: Energy. We include a time dimension to ensure compliance with standards for atmospheric modeling even though each gridded map consists of only one time slice. gridded_NYS_methane_monthly_scaling_factors_2020.nc4 Dimensions: easting (meters) × northing (meters) × time (seconds since 2020-01-01 00:00:00 UTC) Units: unitless This file contains monthly scaling factors for methane emission fluxes in the year 2020, gridded at 100 m × 100 m horizontal resolution using the UTM Zone 18N projection (EPSG:26918), for the 11 source types with significant monthly variability. Annual emissions for these source types can be multiplied by the corresponding monthly scaling factors to produce gridded methane emission fluxes with monthly temporal resolution for 2020 that are consistent with the NYSDEC and NYSERDA inventories as described above. The scaling factors consist of 12 time slices with values of midnight at the beginning of the first day of each month, indicating the start time for when the scaling factor should be applied. gridded_NYS_methane_weekday_scaling_factors_2020.nc4 Dimensions: easting (meters) × northing (meters) × time (seconds since 2020-01-01 00:00:00 UTC) Units: unitless This file contains weekday scaling factors for methane emission fluxes in the year 2020, gridded at 100 m × 100 m horizontal resolution using the UTM Zone 18N projection (EPSG:26918), for the 3 source types associated with wastewater. Annual emissions for these source types can be multiplied by the corresponding weekday scaling factors to produce gridded methane emission fluxes with weekday/weekend variability while remaining consistent with the NYSDEC and NYSERDA inventories as described above. The scaling factors consist of 7 time slices with values of the first 7 days of 2020, with 2020-01-01 corresponding to Sunday, 2020-01-02 to Tuesday, and so on, with 2020-01-07 corresponding to Saturday despite the actual days of the week on which these dates occurred. We do this to ensure compliance with the Harmonized Emissions Component (HEMCO) software for calculating atmospheric emissions which has been coupled with atmospheric models such as GEOS-Chem, the NASA GEOS Earth System Model, and the Community Earth System Model (Lin et al., 2021).
