Data and code behind the data post What pub names remember. All 37,559 named pubs (amenity=pub) in Great Britain in OpenStreetMap, downloaded through the Overpass API in October 2026, are normalised by name, grouped into rough historical themes (monarchy, heraldry, farming and trades, transport, faith, war, animals and sport) and assigned to counties. Findings: the Red Lion is the commonest name (531), followed by the Crown, Royal Oak and White Hart; 36% of pubs have a name no other pub shares. Location quotients pick out regional names such as the Black Bull in Northumberland, the Bay Horse in North Yorkshire, the Talbot in Worcestershire, the Cricketers in Surrey and Hampshire, the Black Lion in Dyfed and the Miners Arms in Derbyshire. Former names recorded in OpenStreetMap include 1990s and 2000s chain brands, showing pubs returning to traditional-style names. AI use: written with drafting, data and coding help from Claude (Anthropic).
