Downward looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data from moorings deployed along the Congo Submarine Canyon and Channel (Atlantic Ocean) deployed on cruise JC187, September 2019 - January 2020.

This dataset of ADCP-mooring (Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers) data from the Congo Canyon-Channel contains water column velocity measurements (east, north, vertical, magnitude), echo amplitudes (for each of the four beams and an average value), and ancillary data (compass heading, cell ranges and time). Measurements were made using downward facing Teledyne RDI Workhorse Sentinel ADCPs, the 75, 300, and 600 kHz models. These instruments were deployed on 11 moorings in September 2019 during research cruise JC187 along the Congo Canyon-Channel, offshore West Africa. Eight ADCP instruments were deployed on seven moorings at five mooring sites in the Upper Congo Canyon in Angolan waters, and four ADCP instruments were deployed on a further four moorings at four sites in the deep-water channel in International waters. The location of each mooring was accurately recorded via triangulation. The moorings were impacted by very powerful seafloor sediment flows (turbidity currents) such that 2 moorings surfaced on 10 October 2019, 1 on 27 December 2019, and 8 between 14 and 16 January 2020. Data were obtained from a total of 9 ADCPs, as data could not be downloaded from one of the recovered instruments and two ADCPs were never recovered. The ADCPs made measurements at different vertical intervals (bins) above the seabed. The 75 kHz data have a bin size of 6 m and measurements every 45 seconds, whilst the 300 kHz data have a bin size of 1.5 m and measurements every 11 seconds, and the 600 kHz a bin size of 0.75 m and measurements every 11 seconds. The data are stored in netCDF format. These data were generated under the National Environment Research Council (NERC) Discovery Science grant NE/R001952/1.
