The purpose of this survey was to study general characteristics of and views about teacher education of teacher educators in the N.S.W. educational institutions. Two further surveys were also conducted within the same study to establish the views of student teachers and practising teachers on issues related to teacher education [SSDA Study Nos. 193 and 195]. Topics covered include: overall satisfaction with work as a teacher educator; time spent on teaching, research and other job related activities; opinion of average level of ability of students; overall satisfaction with work in university or college; difficulties experienced in job as a teacher educator; emphasis given to specified teaching areas; issues of current concern in the design and development of teacher education; rating of the teacher education experience provided for students in your programme; evaluation of teacher training experience including structure of courses, course content, selection for teacher education courses and appointment to teaching service and induction procedures; supervision of student teachers; comparative views on the purpose of schooling. Background variables include: sex; age; current employment position ; amount and type of teaching experience; amount and type of teacher educator experience; experience at present institution; education qualifications ; current study; ethnicity; educational attainment and occupation of parents; second language competency; marital status; initial teacher education; upgrading of initial qualifications; membership of teachers associations.
