The matrix-bound bacterial community of an on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) was characterized by 16S gene amplicon high throughput sequencing (2x300bp Illumina). Samples were collected in November 2016 at a one-inch vertical resolution in duplicate (27 inches, 54 samples in total). Sequences were used to identify and characterize vertical patterns with the OWTS . This depth and precision of this study is novel in the field of wastewater treatment microbial ecology.
