资源简介:

Global Mean Sea Level, or eustasy, exerts a strong forcing on depositional systems, biogeochemical cycles and climate along continental margins. Long-term Phanerozoic Tectono-Glacio-Eustatic curves based on isotope geochemistry or plate reconstructions provide first-order trends but cannot resolve short-term (<1 Ma) ice volume-forced variability, of which effects can be considerable. Here, we utilize a high-resolution climate model to estimate short-term maximum ice volume variability in the Late Cenozoic, as a function of long-term ice volume. Building upon a recent long-term ice volume reconstruction, we then calculate orbital-scale cyclicity throughout the Phanerozoic. Glacio-eustatic fluctuations of >100 m occurred during Paleozoic icehouse times, while they were minor to absent during Mesozoic greenhouse climates. Comparison to stratigraphically derived eustatic reconstructions implies that short-term fluctuations in greenhouse climates were either previously overestimated or are not caused by glacio-eustasy. Our analysis quantifies the range of Phanerozoic sea levels that may be used as independent constraint in paleoclimatology, paleogeography, paleobiology, and paleoceanography.
