POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT SITE 48001712 IN THE POWDER BASIN, NORTHEASTERN WYOMING

Samples from three columns at Site 48001712 in the southern Powder Basin of northeastern Wyoming were examined for pollen , and a mano was washed to recover pollen from the ground surface. In addition, flotation sanples from five hearths and a charcoal scatter were sampled for macrofloral remains. Two activity areas were noted at this site that are separated by about 80 meters. Radiocarbon dates suggest a Middle Archaic occupation, with the possibility of an earlier Early Archaic component. Pollen analysis of the column and mano samples is used to provide paleoenvironment and subsistence information, while macrofloral analysis is used to address subsistence and possible seasonality questions.
