In 2022, parents who identified as Democrats were more likely than Republicans to believe that children should be taught that the legacy of slavery still affects the position of Black people in American society today, with 70 percent of Democratic parents in the United States sharing this belief. In contrast, the majority of parents who identified as Republicans believed that children should be taught that slavery is a part of American history but does not affect the position of Black people in American society today. Republican parents were also slightly more likely than Democrats to believe that children should not learn about slavery in school at all.
