GenAI for Health Profession Students: Help, Hype or Hazard?

That moment—when GenAI gives a student the answer they need—represents more than just convenience. It’s part of a much bigger shift happening in health profession education. Our research set out to understand this shift by systematically reviewing how students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health professions are actually using GenAI in their studies. We found they’re using it in many different ways—like breaking down complex topics, generating practice cases, or helping with clinical reasoning. But we also uncovered issues: most students are using GenAI alone, with little guidance, and rarely for collaborative or discussion-based learning. And while the technology often sounds confident, it’s not always correct. That’s where the risk lies—especially in health education, where misunderstandings don’t just affect grades, but future patient care. Our study highlights the need to use GenAI thoughtfully: not to replace learning, but to support it— Using AI wisely supports learning, builds competence, and saves lives.
