This dataset corresponds to the one used for the analyses in the article “Beyond the edge: environmental characteristics of northwestern Eurasian primary forests contrast with surrounding areas” published in 2025 by M. Martin, N. Khula, T. Braslavskaya, A. Komarova, T. Kuuluvainen, A. Aleinikov and O. Valeria in Ecosphere.The columns of the dataset correspond to the following information: - REGION: Study region- ID_PRIMARY_FOREST: Identifier of the primary forest selected for analysis- BUFFER: “CORE” if the virtual plot is within the primary forest, “BUFF1” if it corresponds to the 1km Buffer around its boundaries.- ID_VIRTUAL_PLOT: Identifier of the virtual plot created within the study area.- LAND_COVER: Land cover defined by Copernicus at the location of the virtual plot- ELEVATION: Altitude in meters at the location of the virtual plot- SLOPE: Slope in percent at virtual plot location- TPI: Topographic position index (no unit) at virtual plot location- HND: Height to nearest drainage in meters at virtual plot location- DIST_NEAREST_RIVER: Distance to nearest river in kilometers at virtual plot locationThe data source is available in Table 2 of the article.
