This dataset contains experimental data collected during pilot trials of the IMPROVED container-based water treatment systems. The trials were conducted across various sites and time periods, testing combinations of advanced treatment technologies for different water sources. The water treatment combined some of the following technologies: EDR – Electrodialysis Reversal GAC – Granular Activated Carbon IEX – Ion Exchange MD – Membrane Distillation MIX – Mixed Bed Resin RO – Reverse Osmosis UF – Ultrafiltration Further details on the trials and a detailed description of the IMPROVED pilot plant can be found at: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvman.2024.121949 The dataset consists of the following elements: IMPROVED Containers data_AUTONOMOUS.docx: Document describing the variables for the data set collected during the autonomous control trial period. Every four hours, the system performs a critical flux evaluation by testing increasing flux values and recording permeability. The point of the first significant permeability drop defines the critical flux. Based on this, the optimal filtration rate and time are calculated (within set limits) and sent from the container to WaterCPS. Dataset: critical_flux_control.csv Dataset description: IMPROVED Containers data_AUTONOMOUS.docx ------- Period: March 2025 – April 2025 Location: Effluent stream from Dow’s industrial WWTP Focus of this phase: Tests of the dynamic recovery rate control through hardness monitoring. This intelligent hardness-recovery control loop that continuously monitored the hardness levels in the RO permeate stream, automatically adjusted system recovery rates to maintain optimal water quality standards. Unlike conventional static operational approaches, this implementation enabled dynamic system response to varying feed water conditions and membrane performance characteristics, ensuring consistent product water quality while maximizing system efficiency.
