A study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding graded levels of digestible carbohydrate (i.e., wheat starch) to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in gut microbiota communities A low carbohydrate (0% wheat starch)/high protein (LC/HP) diet, a medium carbohydrate (15% wheat starch)/medium protein (MC/MP) diet or a high carbohydrate (30% wheat starch)/low protein (HC/LP) diet was fed to triplicate tanks (28 fish each) during twelve weeks. We conducted an in-depth characterization of the distal intestine digesta microbiota using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region ofthe 16S rRNA gene. We observed no significant differences in both alpha diversity and beta diversity indexes of the distal intestine digesta microbiota between experimental groups at the end of the experiment. However, we detected significant differences in the relative abundace at the genus level between experimental groups. Further studies for a better understanding of the metabolic and physiological implications of this change in gut microbiota communities in carnivorous fish fed high carbohydrate diet are required.
