The periodic oscillation of the level of the Amazonian rivers dynamizes the physiographic and limnological characteristics of the Basin. These oscillations often lead to large variations in dissolved oxygen concentrations in water that can be observed over the course of a single day, requiring the ichthyofauna to continually adjust behavioral, biochemical, physiological and morphological characteristics. To understand the mechanisms behind lip expansion, a morphological and anatomical adaptation common to certain species of fish belonging to the order Characiformes exposed to hypoxia, a transcriptome of the expanded labial tissue of tambaqui was performed.
