Our aims were to 1) explain how microbial community compositions (single bacterial strain versus natural microbial assemblages) utilize and transform different substrates; 2) determine how organic substrates (from simple to complex) shape the chemodiversity and microbial communities; and 3) reveal how bacterial metabolites of autotrophic substrates contribute to the marine DOM pool.
