TRPG Demographics and Motivation Survey Dataset

This dataset contains survey data collected as part of a study examining the demographics, behaviors, and motivations of tabletop role-playing game (TRPG) players. The study was designed both to provide descriptive information about TRPG players and their play experiences and to support the development and validation of a measure of motivations for playing TRPGs. The public dataset contains 668 cases and 1,315 variables. Measures include participant demographics; political and social psychographics; TRPG-related behaviors and experiences, such as frequency of play and preferred play environments; and items used in the development and testing of a TRPG player motivation scale. The dataset also includes participants' responses to an open-ended question asking them to recall TRPGs from memory, along with dummy-coded variables derived from those responses (Variables 146–1,315). The repository includes the dataset in CSV and SPSS (.sav) formats. The two data files contain the same participant data, with the SPSS file additionally providing variable and value labels. Accompanying documentation provides information about variable definitions, survey question wording, response options, coding procedures, derived variables, reverse-coded items, scale construction, and data-cleaning procedures. The publicly available data have been de-identified. These materials are provided to support research transparency, replication, secondary analysis, and continued research on tabletop role-playing games, TRPG players, and player motivations. Researchers using the dataset should consult the accompanying README, codebook, and survey materials for detailed information about the study and interpretation of individual variables.
