Driver Training for Automated Vehicle Technology

Project Description The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two training protocols on the drivers’ use of and interaction with vehicle automation. Project Methods 40 adults participated in this study. Participants were randomly placed in one of two groups: 1) review of the operator’s manual (control group) or 2) multimedia training. After completing training, participants six laps on the Virginia Smart road. The laps alternated between manual driving (i.e. no vehicle automation) and assisted driving (i.e. lateral and longitudinal control of the vehicle was maintained by the automated system). Participants also completed secondary tasks with and without the vehicle automation.
