Disruption of the mouse gut microbiota after colonization with the fungus Candida albicans and treatment with antibiotic clindamycin

We used a mouse model to investigate the impact of commensal C. albicans colonization on the bacterial gut microbiota. We found that C. albicans significantly altered the network structure of the bacterial microbiota ecosystem and rendered it more susceptible to disruption with the antibiotic clindamycin. These results illustrate novel cross-kingdom interactions between the eukaryotic fungus C. albicans and various bacterial genera .
