Intermittentpreventivetreatmentinpregnancy(IPTp)withsulfadoxine-pyrimethamine(SP)isalong-standingWHOrecommendation;however,accordingtothelatestWorldmalariareport,58%ofpregnantwomenarestillnotbenefitingfromthisprotectiveintervention.ThisfieldguidefocusesonminimizingthesemissedopportunitiesbyincreasingIPTpcoverageusingacommunity-baseddeliveryapproach(c-IPTp)throughtrainedcommunityhealthworkers,complementingdeploymentofIPTp-SPatantenatalcareclinics.TheapproachiswellalignedwiththeupdatedIPTprecommendationspublishedintheWHOguidelinesformalariaon3June2022.Thedocumentoutlinesessentialstepsandprovidesguidancetocountriesontheadoptionanddeploymentofc-IPTpsothatitisintegratedintotheexistinghealthsystem.ItdrawsuponbestpracticesandlessonslearnedfrompilotimplementationexperiencesineightAfricancountriesandtargetsstakeholdersatthenationallevelthatareinvolvedintheprovisionofmaternalandchildservices,includingnationalandlocalpolicymakersandimplementersofmalaria,maternalhealth,childhealth,reproductivehealthandcommunityhealthprogrammes,andnongovernmentalandotherorganizations.Countriesthatdecidetointroducec-IPTpareencouragedtoadapttheguidancegiveninthisdocumenttotheirnationalandlocalcontexts.
