Effects of a Probiotic on the Health of Normal Young Males (F3 project). F3

This study explores the short-term impact of probiotic yogurt consumption on metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, the metabolome, gene expression in whole blood and the gut microbiota. A randomised cross-over study design was used to test probiotic yogurt compared with milk acidified with 2 % d-(+)-glucono-δ-lactone in fourteen healthy, young men. The dairy products were assessed by single consumption tests (800g/test) and by a 2-week intervention (400 g/d) followed by fasting assessments and a high fat meal challenge. The interventions were preceded by a run-in phase and followed by wash-out phases during which standard full fat milk was provided to participants. Sampling of blood, urine and faeces was performed on each single consumption test day and following the two week intervention. Further stool samples were collected prior to the run-in phase and after the second wash-out phase.
