To be certified as a P4-level, or high containment, laboratory, shown above, a facility had to have multiple ventilation systems, airlocks, autoclaves for the sterilization of equipment, and treatment systems for waste products. In order to comply with the Guidelines, government agencies, universities, and private industry upgraded their laboratories during the second half of the 1970s.
