BARO areas (SVAR2022)

A BARO is a fairly large catchment area that has a comprehensible scope for the viewer and a name that describes the area well. For each BARO area, the sub-basins included have been merged upstream to the exit point of the next BARO area. The divisions have been decided by hydrologists at SMHI so that the BARO division will be relevant for both the general public and for the warning and forecasting service at SMHI. A substantial part of Sweden’s land areas along the coasts are not included in the definition of main river basins, but are located between the outlet points of the main river basins or on islands in the sea. These areas are called coastal areas. The coastal areas have been divided according to sub-basin boundaries along the county boundaries of Sweden and together with BARO they form the whole of Sweden.
