BBC Verify Live content analysis data 2025

This dataset is based on content analysis of BBC Verify Live coverage between the 3^rd June and July 31^st, 2025. Launched in June 2025, BBC Verify Live was designed as a newsroom initiative that makes the verification of news itself visible through its routine conventions and practices. The study focused on the ways in which claims are selected, verified, sourced and evaluated within a live news environment, with a specific focus on the epistemic implications of transparency practices. All posts published on BBC Verify Live over the study period were systematically collected, resulting in a dataset of N = 511 posts. Each post was treated as a unit of analysis and coded across multiple variables relating to topic selection, sourcing practices, visual verification techniques and evaluation of claims. In total, the dataset captured the evaluation of N=544 claims, which reflects that individual posts addressed more than one claim.<br>The analytical framework was designed to assess how transparency is enacted in practice. In contrast to studies that have measured transparency through visible markers such as hyperlinks and data disclosures, this study operationalises transparency through editorial practices. Variables included the geographical focus of coverage (e.g., international versus domestic), thematic focus, hyperlinks and images, whether claims were explicitly challenged or upheld and the presence and type of sources. Further to this, attention was given to the use of visual verification techniques which reflected the prominence of imagery and geolocation in live verification contexts. The selected timeframe captures a period of sustained BBC Verify Live output at the crucial period of its launch. It moves beyond analysing dominant news events which allows for the assessment of routine editorial practices. All posts that were published during the sample period were collected ensuring comprehensive coverage of the live reporting format.<br>The resulting dataset allows for a systematic examination of how transparency is operationalised under the temporal and epistemic constraints of live journalism. In particular, it allows for the analysis of patterns in topic selection, the reliance on institutional sources, and the extent to which claims are scrutinised by BBC Verify. This provides an empirical basis for evaluating the relationship between transparency and epistemic credibility in real-time news environments.<br><br>
