A time series of air temperature measured using various types of radiation shields on an urban station; comparative study in Ostrava, Czech Republic

General information This dataset contains daily climatological data given by 15 different radiation shields. Their measurements were compared with a station O1PORU02 (REF) considered as “gold standard” based on three years of measurements, 2022–2024. This station was selected as a reference since it has the same radiation shield as the official CHMI network station (WMO ID 11790; further referred to in this study as 07PORU01) and because it has the same temperature sensor as the other 14 stations. This enables us to quantify the role of the character of the radiation shield as well as the type of sensor on measured temperature and related temperature-based characteristics. The selection of tested shields covers a wide range of designs and manufacturers, reflecting both current and historical solutions used in Central Europe. The reference station O7PORU02 is a product of Meteoservis Vodňany. Three models (O7PORU07, O7PORU08, and O7PORU09) were provided by Envitech, and two (O7PORU10 and O7PORU11) originated from Fiedler. The set also included a commercially available wooden booth from Bibetus (O7PORU15), a wooden booth used by CHMI (O7PORU16) and a helix-shaped shield from the Slovak manufacturer BARANI (O7PORU22). One of the tested shields (O7PORU23) is commonly used with the WH 1080 weather station. Two bowl-type covers (O7PORU26 and O7PORU27) were supplied by AMET Velké Bílovice. The comparison further included two historical designs: a replica of a metal weather booth (O7PORU24) and a small sheet metal cover as one of the first used in automatic stations (O7PORU28). This dataset is related to the paper titled "How does the radiation shield type affect the air temperature measured by the urban station? Extensive inter-comparison study in Ostrava, Czech Republic". Technical info The dataset contains three subfolders: 00_metadata with a photodocumentation and information about the stations (data download, battery exchange, etc.), 01_inputs with a joined dataset from all the stations and 02_outputs with all the analyses done. The internal structure of the last two folders contains individual climate statistics (TMI, TMA, etc.), including all the figures, tables and tests.
