SMN is known to be implicated in various RNA metabolism roles. Deleting smn-1 results in neuromuscular phenotypes and has been shown to primarily affect motor neurons. However, the role of smn-1 in non-neuronal tissues has yet to be further studied. Here, we sought to study the effect on gene expression when SMN-1 is deleted in a tissue-specific manner. To investigate the role of SMN-1 in specific tissues, we used FLP/Frt to knockout SMN-1 in muscle (myo-3), intestine (elt-2), pan-neuronal (rgef-1) and global (mex-5).
