The labile Pd(II) complex [PdCl(NCMe)3]BF4 has been prepared by treating PdCl2 with NOBF4 in acetonitrile solvent. Reaction of Cp2Fe4(CO)4(C5H4PPh2)2 (1) and [PdCl(NCMe)3]BF4 affords a distorted square-planar complex, trans-[PdCl(Cp2Fe4(CO)4(C5H4PPh2)2)]BF4 (2), bearing an uncommon η2,μ4-carbonyl ligand. Compound 1 reacts with [Cu(NCMe)4]BF4 to generate a novel trigonal-pyramidal complex, [Cu(NCMe)(Cp2Fe4(CO)4(C5H4PPh2)2)]BF4 (3), where the μ4-CO group occupies the apical position. Compound 1 illustrates a more flexible binding capability in comparison with the ferrocenyl analogue (C5H4PPh2)2Fe. Compounds 2 and 3 have been characterized by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR and mass spectroscopies together with a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study.
