The Tomorrow Party: Monash Campus Centre

This report documents a collaboration between WonderLab and Monash Urban Lab that explores what students value about their campus experiences. It is underpinned by creative practice research at Monash University, and enacted in consultation with BVN Architects and KTA to underpin their design of the future Monash Clayton Campus Centre. Our modes of learning and working are rapidly changing, as are the ways in which we interact, collaborate and generate new ideas. Simultaneously, the role of the campus in urban, environmental and social contexts is also shifting. The changing use of campus spaces present unique challenges, as well as unknown potentials for the design of a campus centre. In such a context, innovative methods of engagement with the university community are required. This research elicits a future–oriented dialogue about the diversity of changing needs, desires and values associated with a future campus centre. The Tomorrow Party is a co-creative futures method, designed by Monash WonderLab. The playful, convivial event generates insights about the futures that party-goers want, grounded in their first-hand experiences and shaped by their hopes, aspirations and concerns for the future. To understand what students might want from the Monash Clayton Campus Centre of the future, we invited participants to imagine a world where everything they want is available on campus. This report outlines the responses from party-goers and our analysis of their dreams for their ideal Monash Clayton Campus Centre.
