NRS-17699 | Ear, Nose and Throat Operation Registers

This series records ear, nose and throat surgical operations carried out at Royal Newcastle Hospital. The information recorded includes the name and age of the patient, the date of the operation, the name of the surgeon, the patient’s diagnosis, the anaesthetic employed, and, normally, the exact procedure carried out (this last being entered in the “Remarks” column). Entries are numbered, and the numbering normally commences anew at the beginning of each year.The series was commenced at the beginning of 1921; previously, all operations of every kind were recorded in the Hospital’s Operation Registers (NRS 17700). Both these series, and also the Eye Operation Registers (NRS 17698), appear to conclude within two days of one another at the end of March/ beginning of April 1949, which may point to a broader change in the Hospital’s record-keeping arrangements at that time.The seven volumes of which this series consists display signs of wear, but are otherwise in good repair. The first six volumes are of quarter-bound ledger type. The final volume is of the “expanding” type, with inserted pages between rigid covers with metal fittings.
